Scurrying overhead right after sunrise, then again in the late afternoon. That schedule points to squirrels, not rats. Primitive Wildlife Solutions provides squirrel removal in St. Cloud, FL, and we focus on the part most people skip: finding and sealing every chewed opening so the squirrels cannot just come back.
Licensed & insured. Free inspection. Humane removal and sealing.
Squirrels are persistent chewers. A small gap at a soffit corner becomes a fist-sized hole in a few days. Once inside, they shred insulation for nests and chew on wiring, which is a fire risk you do not want in a Florida attic.
Gray Squirrels and Flying Squirrels
Most of our calls involve the eastern gray squirrel. It is active during the day and loves the oaks along older streets downtown and around St. Cloud Lakefront Park. The southern flying squirrel is smaller, active at night and easy to confuse with rats because of the timing of the noise. Both get into attics the same way, and both need to be sealed out.
Squirrels breed twice a year here, in late winter and again in summer. Those are the times we most often find nests with young in attics, which changes how removal has to be done. A mother squirrel that is shut out of her nest will chew a brand-new hole to reach her babies, often right next to the one you just patched. That is why timing and a careful check for young come before any sealing.
How Squirrels Get Into Your Home
Squirrels climb trees, power lines and stucco walls with ease. On St. Cloud homes we usually find entry at these spots:
- Soffit and fascia. Corners where the boards meet, or where water has softened the wood.
- Roof vents. Plastic and thin metal gable or off-ridge vents chewed open.
- Roof returns. The gap where a lower roof section butts into a wall.
- Overhanging limbs. Branches that let squirrels drop right onto the roof.
Squirrel Removal St Cloud FL: Our Process
We inspect the entire roofline and attic, because squirrels rarely stop at one hole. We look for chew marks, nesting material and droppings, and we check for young. If there are babies, we wait until they are mobile or remove them by hand, so nothing is sealed inside to die and stink up the house.
To get the adults out, we use a combination of one-way doors and humane trapping, depending on the house. Captured squirrels are handled under FWC rules for native wildlife. Once the attic is clear, we repair each chewed entry with metal flashing, heavy hardware cloth or new trim. This is the same sealing work we describe on our wildlife exclusion page.
Older Homes vs. New Construction
The historic homes along 13th Street (US-192) usually have wood fascia and older vents that squirrels chew through easily. Repairs there often mean replacing rotten trim before it can be sealed. In newer communities like Stevens Plantation, Twin Lakes and Harmony, we see squirrels using gaps that were left during construction, such as unscreened vents or loose soffit panels, even on homes only a few years old.
Either way, the fix has to be a real repair, not a strip of foam or a piece of screen that a squirrel can chew through in an afternoon. We also look at the trees around the house. Limbs that hang over the roof or touch the gutters give squirrels a direct bridge, so we will point out which ones should be cut back. Keeping branches several feet from the roofline takes away the easy route, and the sealed entry points handle the rest.
Attic Damage and Cleanup
Squirrels drag leaves and shredded insulation into nests, leave droppings and urine behind and chew on wiring, ductwork and wood framing. Chewed wiring is the part that worries us most, since bare wires buried in dry nesting material are a real fire hazard. If you have had squirrels for a while, have an electrician look at any damaged lines we point out. After removal, we can clear nesting material, sanitize the area and replace damaged insulation through our attic wildlife removal service. If the noise in your attic sounds heavier than a squirrel, read about raccoon removal in St. Cloud, since raccoons use many of the same entry points.

Squirrel Removal Questions from St. Cloud Homeowners
How do I know if it is squirrels or rats in my attic?
Timing is the best clue. Gray squirrels are active in daylight, especially early morning and late afternoon. Rats and flying squirrels are active at night. Droppings and chew marks help too. During an inspection we look at entry holes, nests and droppings and tell you exactly which animal is in your attic.
Why are squirrels such a problem in older St. Cloud neighborhoods?
The established trees downtown give squirrels food and an easy path to the roof, and older homes often have weathered wood trim and dated vents. That combination makes chewing in simple. Trimming limbs back from the roof and replacing soft fascia goes a long way toward keeping them out.
Can I put out poison for squirrels?
We do not recommend it. A poisoned squirrel often dies inside a wall or attic, and the smell can last for weeks. It also does nothing about the holes, so another squirrel moves in. Removal plus sealing the entry points is the approach that actually solves the problem.
When are baby squirrels most likely to be in my attic?
In Central Florida, squirrels breed in late winter and again in summer. If you call during those months, there is a good chance a nest with young is inside. We check for babies during the inspection and plan removal around them, so no young are sealed in the attic.
