A snake in the garage, coiled by the pool pump or stretched across the lanai is one of the most common calls we get from the east side of Osceola County. Primitive Wildlife Solutions provides snake removal in St. Cloud, FL around the clock, and we will tell you straight what kind of snake you are dealing with.
Licensed & insured. Free inspection. Humane removal and sealing.
Most snakes we pull out of yards here are harmless. A few are not. Either way, the rule is the same: keep your distance, keep kids and pets inside, and let someone with the right tools handle it. Do not try to kill it with a shovel. That is how most bites happen.
Why St. Cloud Sees So Many Snakes
A lot of St. Cloud has been built in the last several years, and many of those subdivisions back right up to cattle pasture, wetlands and conservation land. Snakes that lived in that habitat do not vanish when a neighborhood goes in. They move along retention ponds, drainage swales and fence lines, and they end up in garages, pool cages and landscape beds.
Communities off Narcoossee Road and Canoe Creek Road, along with Harmony and the newer streets near Twin Lakes, sit close to that open land. Homes near East Lake Toho deal with water snakes along the shoreline. Rodents are the other draw. Where there are mice and rats, snakes follow.
Venomous Snakes in Osceola County
Four venomous species live in Central Florida. If you are not sure what you are looking at, treat it as dangerous and back away.
- Eastern diamondback rattlesnake. Heavy body, diamond pattern, often in pasture edges and palmetto.
- Dusky pygmy rattlesnake. Small and gray with dark blotches; easy to miss in mulch and leaves.
- Cottonmouth (water moccasin). Thick, dark snake near ponds, ditches and lake edges.
- Eastern coral snake. Red, yellow and black bands; secretive and often found under debris.
Harmless Snakes You Are More Likely to Find
The southern black racer is the snake we catch most often. It is fast, slim and jumpy, and it will flee if given room. Rat snakes, including the red rat snake (corn snake) and yellow rat snake, climb well and sometimes show up in attics or garages chasing rodents. Garter snakes, ribbon snakes, ring-necked snakes and brown water snakes round out the usual list.
The brown water snake gets mistaken for a cottonmouth all the time, especially around the lake and the marina. We identify the snake on site so you know what was actually in your yard. That matters, because a harmless snake near the back porch calls for a different plan than a rattlesnake under the shed. Knowing the species also tells us where it is likely hiding and what drew it in, such as rodents, standing water or thick ground cover.
Snake Removal St Cloud FL Residents Call First
When you call, we ask where the snake is and whether it is still in sight. If it is inside your home, close the door to that room and put a towel along the bottom gap. Then keep an eye on it from a safe distance. We remove the snake with proper tools and relocate it according to FWC rules, which allow release on the property or at a site of 40 or more acres in the same county with the landowner’s written permission.
After removal, we look at why the snake got in. Gaps under garage doors, open weep holes, torn pool cage screens and pipe penetrations are common. We can seal those as part of our wildlife exclusion service.
Cutting Down on Snake Visits
You cannot make a yard next to wetlands snake-free, but you can make it less inviting. Keep grass short along fence lines. Move woodpiles, stacked pavers and spare lumber off the ground and away from the house. Trim shrubs so there is a gap between the plants and your walls. Most of all, deal with rodents, since they are the main reason snakes stick around. If you are seeing rats in the attic or chewed wiring, our attic wildlife removal work handles that side of it. Snake Removal Questions from St. Cloud Homeowners
I live in a new subdivision next to pasture. Will I keep seeing snakes?
Probably some, at least for the first few years. Snakes are moving out of the land that was cleared and into what is left nearby, including your yard. Sealing garage gaps, keeping debris off the ground and controlling rodents makes a real difference in how often they come close to the house.
Is that a water moccasin by the lake behind my house?
Maybe, but often it is a brown water snake, which is harmless and very common around East Lake Toho. The two look alike to most people. Do not get close to check. Send us a photo from a safe distance or call, and we can come out, identify it and remove it if needed.
Do you remove snakes at night in St. Cloud?
Yes. We answer wildlife emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A snake inside a home, especially one you think might be venomous, is the kind of call we take at any hour. Keep the room closed off and watch it from a distance until we arrive.
Can you kill the snake instead of relocating it?
We do not recommend it, and most of the snakes we find are harmless species that help control rodents. Florida rules allow native wildlife to be released on the property or relocated to a qualifying site in the same county. We remove the snake safely and focus on keeping it from getting back inside.
